Spain has only relatively recently come to prominence on international markets with a plethora of interesting wines in many different styles. It is the indigenous grape varieties which are increasingly celebrated.
Spain has three broad climatic zones:
the north and north west has a maritime climate dominated by the Atlantic's weather systems, with high rainfall;
the east coast has a warm Mediterranean climate; and
the centre has a hot continental climate.
Heat and the lack of water are the biggest challenges to grape growing in Spain.
