Carménère is a very important grape variety in Chile. It was originally a Bordeaux variety and sometimes used as a blend with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Carménère wines are deep in colour with high levels of tannin. They have blackberry and peppery spice flavours.
In order to ripen fully, Carménère needs the warmest and sunniest sites, particularly those in the Central Valley. It ripens even later than Cabernet Sauvignon.
